What pushing past your comfort zone can feel like:

  • Absolute terror (how the hell are you supposed to succeed?)
  • Questioning your desire and trying to logic your way out of what you want
  • Insanity (who are you to go after your dream?)
  • Constant failure
  • Oscillating between two emotions so quickly you don’t know if you’re developing multiple personalities
  • Rage you didn’t even know was bubbling below the surface waiting to burst causing you to actually snap at the people you love most
  • Justifying your choices to everyone around you trying to prove to them you’re not crazy (because if they think you are, you might get kicked out of the tribe and historically that meant you’d literally die)
  • Numbness, a complete lack of motivation, long binges on social media or Netflix, napping your life away

Any of these things are ok, totally normal, and don’t mean anything about who you are or what you’re capable of.

All you have to do is pay attention to them and start to ask yourself if what you want is worth the discomfort, painful feelings, and doubts. If it is: do it anyway with total kindness at your situation. If it isn’t: find something that is. (Or don’t. No one can tell you how to live your life but you.)

You can’t avoid painful emotions and stressful experiences, but you can change the awareness you’re bringing to them and be kinder to yourself along the way.
